Anaerobic digestion (AD) is biological process of biogas production from putrescible waste used for energy production or converted into methane for use as a motor fuel.

Characteristics

In anaerobic digestion putrescible waste is transformed into biogas that consists mainly of methane and CO2 and can be used as a renewable energy source. Anaerobic digestion has a number of significant advantages:

  • It enables production of valuable renewable energy (electricity or fuel for vehicles);
  • It allows effective control of odour formation;
  • It improves the energy balance of the entire plant;
  • It leaves a very limited ecological footprint.

Anaerobic digestion is a natural addition to a composting plant process cycle, as composting is the best way to recycle the solid part of the putrescible waste - the digestate.

In fact, anaerobic digestion can replace active phase of the composting process. Anaerobic digestion produces real Green Energy and, in the end, it is itself a full-fledged industrial enterprise.
